Friday, July 18, 2008 Bethel Island Post Office:
The Always Quiet and Brooding Postmaster: I saw you on TV!
Me: Really?
TAQABP: On the news! I've never seen a person I know on TV before!
Me: Was it about Mayor Gavin Newsom running for governor?
TAQABP: Yeah, yeah! And guys getting married to eachother too!
Me: Yeah, I'm glad that it actually aired, I--
TAQABP: I've got nothing against that marriage stuff -- marry who ever you want! Man, I couldn't believe that I knew someone and then they were on TV! I told your dad the last time he came in.
Me: ...Awesome.

Daniel Clowes on the Simpsons tonight. Lisa professes her love for Enid. I knew that when Lisa became my favorite at the ripe old age of 6 her and I were soulmates. |

I'm watching an American presentation of English footage, and they're subtitling the English voices! Can you believe that? The Discovery Channel doesn't think that their American audience can comprehend the Northern English dialect.
I'm in hysterics right now! |

I'm so glad these guys are getting some recognition - finally.
You can download several few episodes, including Yoko on iTunes, via the Flight of the Conchords podcast. Enjoy the funniest thing on TV at the moment.

So, life has been - WAIT. Hold that inward thought Ashleyanne. Those 4 beginning words were far too 'livejournally' to handle. Let's begin this on a more grown-up sounding note.
I am in a musical at the moment. The first time in 4 years, and I am kicking ass in a lead role. Return to the Forbidden Planet:

... has been going really well, but completely draining. By trying to communicate B-Movie sensabilities onstage, I must always be at an extreme, "10" on my character dial. My movements, expressions, speech and singing are all BIG BIG BIG; and it's fucking exhausting. It'll look great though. We had a performance of my "big solo make you cry in amazement song" last night and it went pretty well. I fucking love to sing, and being here, being chosen for this project really drills into my skull the fact that I have a talent that is rarer than my cynic self feels comfortable to believe. I just wish opening week wasn't right before I have 7,500 words due in. I haven't even been able to catch my breath sufficiently lately, and I've been living solely on food from on campus eateries (no time to grocery shop) and these:

Seriously delicious popsicles. I have at least one a day. I've been destressing with an amazingly relaxing and uplifting mix (thank you - you know who you are) and some Peep Show, Derren Brown, and The Mighty Boosh. But, the kitchen is still heating up, and I'm sweating from the pressure to write two amazing papers - one detailing the social and economic changes during the US industrial revolution, which helped created an evangelical middle class, who unfairly underestimated and oppressed working-class & immigrant women, and another using feminist analysis to deconstruct the infantilizing tropes still apparent in representations of Latin femininity in contemporary melodrama (specifically looking at the films Spanglish (2004) and Real Women Have Curves (2002). Wish me luck. And someone better be taking me out for a pint after all the crazy has died down. I'm looking forward to a weekend of (questionable English) Mexican food, tech rehearsals, and lot's o'Kronenburg.
And on a bit of sad and shocking note; I'll be back in San Francisco in under two months. I know know whether to be sad or happy at this point. I just don't want to think about it. |
